Ralston, Doris J. (University of California, Berkeley), B. S. Baer, and S. S. Elberg. Lysis of brucellae by the combined action of glycine and a lysozyme-like agent from rabbit monocytes. J. Bacteriol. 82:342-353. 1961.-An acid-extractable lytic material was obtained from rabbit monocytes. It acts on a substrate in the walls of brucellae and has properties similar to egg-white lysozyme. Brucella melitensis strain Rev Is is completely resistant to this agent and also to crystalline lysozyme, but when the cells are exposed to sufficient amounts of glycine, the surface is rendered susceptible to these lytic agents. Rough type Rev Is cells are more susceptible than smooth, and the virulent B. melitensis strain 6015 is most resistant.

Hydrocortisone Reduces Toll-Like Receptor 4 Expression on Peripheral CD14+ Monocytes in Patients Undergoing Percutanoues Coronary Intervention
Bacground: Evidence from several lines of investigations suggests that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is involved in atherosclerosis as a bridge between innate and acquired immunity. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) can trigger inflammation through activation of human TLR4 (hTLR4) on monocytes. Hydrocortisone as an anti-inflammatory and immuno-suppressant agent has multiple mechanisms of a...

Ralston, Doris J. (University of California, Berkeley). Staphylococcal sensitization: specific biological effects of phage K on the bacterial cell wall in lysis-from-without. J. Bacteriol. 85:1185-1193. 1963.-Phage K, shown previously to sensitize staphylococcal-wall mucopeptide to the action of a phage-induced enzyme, virolysin, was found to act in a specific manner in that its sensitizing eff...
متن کاملInhibitory Effect of Cinnamomum Zeylanicum and Camellia Sinensis Extracts on the Hen EggWhite Lysozyme Fibrillation
Background & Aims: Many neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson and Huntington diseases are associated with the deposition proteinaceous aggregates known as amyloid fibrils. Currently, there is no approved therapeutic agent for inhibition of fibrillar assemblies. One important approach in the development of therapeutic agents is the use of herbal extracts. At the present com...
متن کاملActivation of Toll-Like Receptors 2 by High-Mobility Group Box 1 in Monocytes from Patients with Ischemic Stroke
Background: Stroke is a leading cause of death all around the world, and ischemic stroke is considered to be the most common stroke type. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are important molecules for detection of both pathogen invasion and tissue damage. In this regard, the purpose of this study was to assess the expression level of TLR2 on monocytes in patients with ischemic stroke and to evaluate th...
متن کاملEpidermal mucus, a major determinant in fish health: a review
Fish epidermal mucus contains innate immune components, secreted by globlet cells that provide the primary defence against different pathogenic microbes and act as a barrier between fish and its immediate niche. The major function of mucus includes entrapment and sloughing of microbes. The mucus also contains many factors such as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), lysozymes, lectins, proteases, etc...
